In search of a BIG UGLY!
Port Lavaca, Texas
Well this weekend I was tired from a long week at work and really had things to do but I wanted
to wet a line. Fortunately one of the tasks was to meet my sister in Port Lavaca and take
position of a car. What luck! One thing out of the way and one of my favorite
place to fish. With rods loaded and crabs on hand we head to PL! Picking up
the car went as planned. With that done we proceed to the pier. The pier was
packed as expected but we set up one rod here and another there. eventually we
caught our first fish of the night. A smallish Big Ugly that went just a bit over
38". We wait a round a bit and nothing. It was slow. Then a kid yells from the
other side of the pier "You have a run"! I tell him to get it but he didn't.
Albert wasn't afraid and lands this nice 40" BU!
We sit around for a while BS'ing with the guys when all of a sudden a rod
takes off but we miss it. This happened several times throughout the trip.
Strange! Especially with circle hooks.
We check the crab and it was bitten in half. Must have been small fish. One guy
did manage to catch a very nice 29" keeper. Man that fish looked allot like supper.
Throughout the night we helped people land a fish here and their. One guy managed
to break off on what looked like fairly heavy gear. Must have been big. Around
1ish in the morning one of the line goes slack. My turn! I end up with this nice
42" BU!
One guy threw out his bait when he left and can you spot the magic bait? I had
some guys convinced that we were catching the fish on CHICKEN! Yup we had
fooled for a good while!
A bit later Albert managed to catch this good sized fish. Look at he head on him!
I'm talking about the fish!

We stuck around till the sun came up and shortly afterwards I catch a nice fish on
one of my small rods that had 15# test on it. Glad the pier had cleared out. That
fish had me running everywhere.
All in all the trip was pretty good. We caught 6 BIG Uglies ranging from 38 to 42
inches and they all gave a good fight. I expect this place only to get better
thru the winter.
