Slimefest 2003
The big Gafftop are in!

Slimer #1
Soon after we set up our rods we started to catch these big Gafftop. Some people love them some don't! I would rather not touch them. They are too much like carp except without the lips.
We continue to catch these fish through the night. We weighed one that went 7 pounds.

Fish #1 41" long.
Look at the color on that fish. Gold as can be. It must have just come from offshore.

Fish #2 43" long.
Soon after I catch this silver redfish. It was Anthony's turn but he decided to eat breakfast instead. We all make choices.

Slimer #2
Victor catches himself a big Slimer.

Slimer #3
Anthony catches a Gafftop on one of the big rods. He was disappointed when it was HIS turn and it was not a redfish.

Fish #3 29" long.
Victor catches the smallest redfish I have seen at Meacom's to date. It was almost a keeper. Look at what dead shrimp on the bottom can get you.
Smile for the camera Victor.

Fish #4, 38" long.
Albert gets into the action after breakfast and catches this beauty. Nice fish Albert.

Did I mention we were using a Catchalot® Leader which is now available with a Mustad 14/0 Circle hook for the easy release of these fish!

Fish #5, 42" long.
Anthony could not let his little brother beat him. So he runs to the first bending rod he see's and catches this nice fish. YES, it was bigger than his brothers! It was my turn but he is getting a little too quick for me.

Check out this Double!

Fish #6, 43" long and Fish #7, 38" long at the same time!.
These two rods were about a foot apart and we could not tell which one had the fish. It turned out that both rods had fish on at the same time. That was SPOOKY!

Fish #8, 40" long.
I finaly get to see some action when I hook into this fish.

Fish #9, 42" long and Fish #10 a 43 incher!
Here is another double. Unlike the first double these fish came from opposite sides of the pier at the same time.

Fish #11, 40" long.
Check this one out!
Victor catches his first real Bull redfish! Really nice fish Victor!
Victor is the smaller of the two Lopez's in this picture.

Jessie gets into the action himself by catching this 42" redfish.

Fish #12, 38" long.
After a short dry spell I hook into this fish. Dragged me around the pier like a rag doll. I do say "HE" because he was croaking the whole time we were measuring him. If this fish would have been hooked at night and lost I would have said he was about 50 inches long. He really had some fight in him. I could not believe how much line he was taking.

Big Ugly #1, 36" long.
Later in the night after two fish breaking off on Anthony and Jesse I manage to get to a rod and land this big black drum.

Fish #13, 41" long.
Here's another one of natures cookie cutter bull redfish I have been fortunate enough too catch.

Now for the REPORT!

The weather was sunny, hot and beautiful on Saturday and really nasty on Sunday! We had rough seas and high winds on Sunday! We caught so much bait it was not funny. We had whiting, croaker, sand trout, ribbon fish, silver perch and mullet ready for what ever wanted it. We could smell the feeding trout in the distance but They never came close enough to cast to them. It was great to be out there! We landed 13 over size redfish that were 38" to 43" long, countless big gafftop that went to 7 pounds and broke off on 4 different sharks. I say they were sharks becase they cut the leader. Three were runs on my redfish rods but one was on my shark rod. I had a chunk of stingray on my 4/0 wide and the fight was on. He took out line with a heavy drag for at least 20 seconds before he bit through 400# mono like it was dental floss. We did not take pictures of all of the gafftop we caught because like I mentioned before I do not like touching them. We also landed 1 Big Ugly. I know we lost at least 4 other fish. I had about 6 other runs on my redfish rigs but they were gafftop. We know this buy all the SLIME that was left on the leader. The fish were landed throughout the day and night but most of the bigger fish were landed during the day. We saw a whole mess of different types of fish caught this weekend. We saw 1 bull shark caught that was just over 4 feet.

Team C.B.F's scores again!

I thank God for the opportunity!

My friend Roy L. is going to have heart surgery this week. Please keep him in your prayers!
Hope everything goes well Roy!
We will be waiting for you at the pier.
