1st Kayak trip to Baffin Bay in 2003
Riviera, Texas

This is a report from a trip that P.A.C.K. (Paddling Anglers in Canoes and Kayaks) decided to take to Baffin Bay. The other members took there kayaks and I took my boat to haul all the extra gear they could not fit into there Kayaks. We fished a spot where I fished many times before and is a proven place to catch fish. I have witnessed a trophy trout and a large redfish caught in this exact spot.
So we decided why not give it a try.

Sometimes a good sunset is all that is needed for a good trip.
Not this trip! I want to catch some fish!

I fished until 4:15 am with dead mullet on the bottom to catch a small trout, 6 under sized redfish and one that went 22.5 inches. I also caught about 700 plus hardheads. O.K. maybe not that many but it was way to many for me.

By Saturday morning Eli was the only one really catching anything. I also catch one 18" trout on my chrome/green He Dog.

Here is Barry in his kayak taking a breather and posing for this picture after a long fish scouting trip.

Here is Eli drifting a flat in his Yak.

I did not have to ask twice for volunteers to go eat with me at the world famous Kings Inn restaurant just a short boat trip away.

Ken chilling on his yak!

Here is Joseph on his yak. He came all the way from Austin to join us. We also almost missed him.

Barry getting up at camp early in the morning. Did these guys bring everything or what?

Here is the gang (Eli, Joseph, Ken and Barry) ready to head back to the launch site after a hard weekend of fishing.

After leaving the gang at the dock I decided to hit a flat that Barry and I fished on Saturday with our fly rods. I finally find several redfish big enough not to be scared of my fly. I messed up and got too excited on the first two fish I spotted. After calming down and thinking what I did wrong I encounter this 28" beauty. This fish ties my largest redfish caught on a fly rod. What a fight. I had forgotten how much fun it was to site cast a redfish in 5 inches of water.

Here are the two redfish I landed with my 8wt. fly rod. I caught the second fish walking back to the boat.

Now for the REPORT!

The weather was sunny, hot and windy! The water was an ugly brown and there were too many boats! I spent some quality time with some good fishing buddies. To bad we did not catch that many fish. I have done better and I have done worse. I guess that's why they call it fishing not catching. I am really glad I took my fly rod. I will be using it the rest of the year. Maybe the next trip will be more productive and you might be able to join us.
P.A.C.K. meet's every third tuesday of each month. Check out there website for more information http://www.packtx.org/.

I thank God for this fishing opportunity!
